14th Cape Town Convention Conference

September 2 - September 3

14th Cape Town Convention Conference

2nd and 3rd September 2025

Save the Date

This year’s Cape Town Convention conference will be held on Tuesday, 2nd and Wednesday, 3rd of September 2025. Organised under the auspices of the Cape Town Convention Academic Project, it will be held at Robinson College, Cambridge as an in-person conference, but also with the opportunity to join virtually for anyone who is not able to join in person.

The theme for the conference this year is implementation of treaties, and, specifically, the CTC. As well as general discussion of implementation from experts in international and treaty law, there will be more detailed discussion of various CTC-specific issues, such as the drafting and content of court rules, inclusion of non-judicial remedies and administrative procedures (specifically on de-registration, where applicable, and export). The sessions will cover the position in relation to the Aircraft Protocol, and consideration of issues from the point of view of the Rail and Mining, Agriculture and Construction (MAC) Protocols. As usual, the programme will include contributions from leading legal academics and other Cape Town Convention experts, and the sessions will include ample opportunity for questions and debate.

There are also two other relevant events in the UK during the conference week. There will be a launch of the Guide on Best Practices for Electronic Business Registries, which has been developed by the project on Best Practices in the Field of Electronic Registry Design and Operation on Monday, 1st September at 3 pm. The launch, which will consist of an explanation and discussion of the Guide, is followed by a drinks reception and will take place at Robinson College, Cambridge.

UNIDROIT will also be organising an international conference on the benefits of the Rail Protocol and MAC Protocol to the Cape Town Convention on Friday, 5th September in London (exact location to be determined). The event will provide an opportunity for diplomatic representatives, government officials, private sector stakeholders, legal practitioners and academics to learn more about the operation of these Protocols and how they facilitate credit expansion and sustainable development.

Please save the date and await further information on the conference and instructions for booking.

We look forward to welcoming you in Cambridge (or online) for what promises to be yet another excellent and inspiring conference.

Yours Sincerely,

Professor Louise Gullifer Q.C. (hon) FBA

Professor Ignacio Tirado
